Hemp Seed Milk

Nothing against dairy, in fact, dairy is a staple in our household. Whole milk, yogurt and cheese are part of our daily diet. My husband and I love dairy so much, we got married at South Farms, a former dairy and cattle farm! I definitely prefer organic cow milk to a lot of the processed nut and soy milk alternatives out there filled with sweeteners, emulsifiers and/or preservatives.

In some studies, though, dairy intake has been associated with acne and atopic dermatitis (eczema). So, while I would never advocate giving up a particular food group completely and indefinitely (unless absolutely medically necessary), if you are one of those people who find that dairy aggravates your skin, it is nice to have healthy, wholesome alternative options!

Hemp seed milk fits the bill. It is easy to make, without requiring presoaking or straining, from whole hemp seeds and a high speed blender. Hemp seeds are inexpensive, easily found (we get them at costco) and keep well in the refrigerator or freezer. They are high in protein, fiber, and both omega-6 and -3 polyunsaturated fatty acids. Since you aren’t straining the milk, you reap all of the benefits of the whole hemp seed, including the oil. An added benefit is that hemp seed oil may actually improve symptoms of atopic dermatitis such as itchiness and dryness and decrease the need for topical medications.

*This milk is made with hemp seeds only and does not contain any cannabidiol (CBD).

Each 1 cup serving has 10g of protein and 12 g of omega 3&6 fatty acids!

½ cup hemp seeds

4 cups filtered water

Optional:

Spoonful of maple syrup or honey

Splash of vanilla

Pinch of sea salt

Blend in high powdered blender 2-3 minutes. Store in refrigerator up to 5 days. May separate slightly, just shake before serving. Can be added to coffee, oatmeal, baked goods, or enjoyed straight from the glass! Also great in a cozy hemp milk hot cocoa (just add cocoa powder + sweetener of choice and gently warm) or hot mocha (cocoa powder + leftover coffee) on these cold winter days.
