Azelaic Acid. The unsung skin superstar.

Azelaic acid is a dicarboxylic acid molecule naturally found in wheat and barley. It is also produced as a metabolic by-product from a yeast commonly found on the skin, Malassezia furfur. It is synthetically made in skin care products and has a host of benefits.

Azelaic acid can be used to treat acne, rosacea, and melasma. It helps skin cell turnover, exfoliating and unclogging pores, but is not too irritating, making it a great alternative to retinoids in acne patients with sensitive skin. It has mild anti-inflammatory properties and helps improve skin redness, useful in patients with rosacea. Azelaic acid also acts as a tyrosinase inhibitor, resulting in decreased melanin synthesis. Therefore it can be used to lighten and brighten the skin in patients with pigmentation issues such as melasma.

Azelaic acid is safe to use in pregnant and breastfeeding mamas. In fact, I did not truly appreciate its numerous benefits until I was pregnant with my son, four years ago. My skin flared and since most acne treatments are out of the question during pregnancy, I begrudgingly started using azelaic acid. It worked so well, I have continued it ever since. Since it is safe to use long-term, it can be a mainstay of your simple skin-care regimen. Best of all, it is easy to find over-the-counter. The Ordinary 10% azelaic acid is one of my favorites. Stronger concentrations are available by prescription.

To use, simply apply a small amount to the face after cleansing and before moisturizing. Always a good idea to test on a small area of skin first, since it is possible, though uncommon, to have an allergic reaction. It can be used either morning or night, or both.
